What's in a Name Anyway?
A Domain Name is a name that identifies one or more IP
addresses. For example, the domain name microsoft.com represents
about a dozen IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs to
identify particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.tampacomputersolutions.com/index.htm,
the domain name is tampacomputersolutions.com.
Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level
domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of
such domains.
For example:
gov - Government agencies
edu - Educational institutions
org - Organizations (nonprofit)
mil - Military
com - commercial business
net - Network organizations
ca - Canada
th - Thailand
Because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names,
every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to
translate domain names into IP addresses.
Having the right domain name can mean the difference between
success and failure of a web site's hit ratio. Many of the
so called "good names" are already taken, and finding one that's
a perfect match for your company may be frustrating. As
part of our services we will suggest, search for and register
the right domain name for your web site.
A domain name is the "address" of your web site. It is the
first step in giving your business an online presence. If
you're not ready to design your site, you can still register and
secure the domain name until you are ready to launch your new
web site. Domain Names can be purchased through us for as
little as $8.95 per year, and you must renew it every year
before it expires or it will be made available to the public.
Several year dues may be paid in advance if desired.
